Like many young artists, Lanez can rap or sing with equal ease, and on his recently released major-label debut, I Told You, he shows a keen sense of other modern trends: “To D.R.E.A.M” features a credible impression of last year’s premier hitmaker, Fetty Wap, while “Luv,” arrives at a time when slender, dancehall-inflected cuts are enjoying a wave of popularity. The result provided Lanez with his first bona fide hit. ![]() But when Lanez made the track “Say It” in 2015, he didn't bother with any additional contouring the chorus is beamed in straight from Brownstone’s “If You Love Me,” which cracked the Top Ten in 1995. For years, rapper Tory Lanez wove snippets of the R&B he loved into his music, but the original tune often served as a jumping-off point, a block of clay to be molded (see his rework of Ginuwine's “Pony”). ![]()
